A Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian region of Tatarstan has left at least 13 people dead and dozens injured in the city of Nizhnekamsk. This is one of the deadliest attacks carried out by Kyiv deep into Russian territory since the start of the war.
Located more than 1,000 km from Ukraine, this city is a major hub for the oil and petrochemical industries. This type of infrastructure is increasingly becoming the target of long-range Ukrainian attacks. Russian media report that a major oil refinery was hit.
Meanwhile, Russian attacks continued in Ukraine. In the Kharkiv region, artillery fire on a village killed five people and destroyed homes. A drone attack destroyed several floors of a residential building. Additional casualties were reported on both sides following drone attacks in border areas and along the front lines.
In recent months, both Russia and Ukraine have intensified their long-range attacks. According to the United Nations, this is also leading to an increase in civilian casualties. Russia claims to have intercepted hundreds of Ukrainian drones “at night,” while Ukraine has also reported large-scale launches of Russian drones.
Ukraine asserts that its attacks on Russian oil facilities are aimed at weakening Russia’s war-fighting capacity and pressuring Moscow to negotiate. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has described these attacks as justified retaliatory measures and warned that the consequences of the war will be increasingly felt within Russia itself.
