In northern France, a 17-year-old girl died while celebrating France’s victory over Morocco at the World Cup in the U.S., according to French media reports.
The incident occurred in Aulnoye-Aymeries, near Maubeuge in northern France, not far from the Belgian border. According to the regional newspaper La Voix du Nord, the 17-year-old girl had climbed onto a truck that was part of a long line of vehicles driving through the city center to celebrate the French national soccer team’s qualification for the World Cup semifinals following their victory over Morocco (2-0) in the quarterfinals. However, the girl fell from the truck and was run over by the vehicle. She died at the scene.
Six minors were near the scene of the accident. One of them was in shock and was taken to the hospital in Maubeuge. The truck driver has been taken into custody.
The victory over Morocco was celebrated throughout France, but the celebrations were much calmer than expected. According to BFMTV, ten people were arrested in and around Paris. Three were arrested for stealing cell phones in Paris, four for assault with a weapon and conspiracy to commit violence, and three for firing mortar shells.
