A 6-year-old boy died Tuesday evening in Frankfurt an der Oder, Germany, after falling from the 11th floor of an apartment building.

According to German media, the tragedy occurred around 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Emergency services rushed to the scene of the accident in Frankfurt/Oder (Brandenburg) after a child with serious injuries was found in front of the apartment building.

The boy was staying with his mother on the 11th floor of the building. For reasons that remain unclear, the child may have fallen over the balcony railing, according to police. All rescue attempts failed: the six-year-old boy died at the scene.

The police have ruled out foul play by a third party but are continuing their investigation into the exact circumstances of the accident.

In the Netherlands as well, children have fallen out of windows in recent days, likely in an attempt to escape the heat. A similar incident occurred on Sunday in Schiedam and on Monday in Apeldoorn.
