A 60-year-old British man from Porthcawl, in South Wales, has been sentenced to two years and four months in prison for hiding his deceased mother’s body in a freezer in his living room for almost three years. Meanwhile, he continued to collect her pension and social security benefits, according to various British media outlets.

The man’s mother, Sylvia Phillips, died in March 2023 at the age of 89. Instead of reporting her death, he bought a large freezer two days later and hid her body inside it.

According to the court ruling, Christopher Phillips had lived very closely with his mother for many years. He was her primary caregiver and had even quit his job to care for her full-time when her health began to decline. After her death, however, he not only continued to receive her financial support and pension benefits, but also pretended that his mother was still alive: he spoke with doctors, told them she was visiting family in London, and even continued to pick up her prescriptions.

The police did not discover the body until February 2026, following a concerned phone call from the family doctor. In the freezer, officers found Sylvia Phillips completely frozen, wrapped in a blanket and surrounded by items that suggested her son wanted to “preserve” her presence. The investigation revealed no suspicious cause of death.

Phillips eventually pleaded guilty to preventing a lawful and dignified burial and to fraud for concealing the death. The court ruled that he had intentionally lied to doctors and the police and that he had derived financial benefit from the benefits that continued to be paid after his mother’s death. In total, he received approximately 90,000 euros. A separate proceeding is still pending to determine whether that money can be recovered.
