Two children and one adult were killed in a traffic accident in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen shortly after noon on Thursday afternoon. A car struck a group of children who were cycling during a school camp.
The accident occurred on the N290 between the villages of Terhole and Vogelwaarde, not far from Hulst, in Zeeland. According to the Zeeland Safety Region (VRZ), a passenger car collided with a group of 14 children on bicycles and two chaperones during their school camp.
"Unfortunately, three people died in the incident, including two children and one supervisor. In addition, four children were seriously injured; they were transported to the hospital and are currently being treated there. The other supervisor and the remaining children have been taken into care, and assistance is being organized for them and their loved ones," the Safety Region stated.
Emergency services arrived en masse at the scene with ambulances, trauma helicopters, and a police helicopter.
The four injured were transported to Ghent University Hospital, Antwerp University Hospital, and Erasmus MC in Rotterdam.
The police have launched an investigation into the exact circumstances of the accident and are asking witnesses to come forward. The provincial road is closed in both directions.
