A 40-year-old Dutch tourist died while on vacation on the Greek island of Crete when she tried to save her friend in the sea near Malia, close to Chersonissos.
According to local media reports, the incident occurred around noon on Wednesday. The two women, along with three minor children—two preschoolers and a teenager—had rented a small speedboat that did not require a boating license.
While swimming, one of the two women got into trouble. The Dutch woman jumped in after her but lost consciousness herself.
Her friend eventually managed to save herself. Three minors who had remained on the rented speedboat witnessed the drama and screamed for help. People from a nearby marina arrived at the scene on a jet ski. They brought the woman back ashore, but attempts by the emergency services that rushed to the scene to resuscitate her were in vain: the woman died at the scene.
