For 46 years now, the Razzie Awards have been reminding us of this: the famous, dreaded and at times condemned awards dedicated to the most disappointing films of the season.
The 46th edition, to be held on the evening of March 14, spared no one and announced the nominations with two titles in the lead: the live-action Snow White film and War of the Worlds, both with six nominations. Among the big names on the blacklist were Natalie Portman and Jared Leto.
The Golden Raspberry Awards, also known as the Razzie Awards, are the flip side of the Oscars: here, excellence is celebrated, not mediocrity. Brainchild of American journalist John J. B. Wilson in 1981, the Razzie Awards spotlight the cinematic productions that have most disappointed both critics and audiences. The nominations for this 46th edition once again indicate that even major productions, especially American ones, can fail spectacularly.
Two titles will be vying for this year's negative award: the Disney remake of Snow White, which received six nominations, a score equalled by War of the Worlds. Both productions clearly have numerous weaknesses in several aspects of their cinematography.
In the worst actor category, singer The Weeknd (real name Abel Tesfaye) was nominated for Hurry up tomorrow. The irony? In the film, he plays himself, albeit in a distorted version of reality. The film received a total of five nominations, a clear sign it had many problems.
Other nominees for Worst Actor included Dave Bautista for In the Lost Lands, Ice Cube for War of the Worlds, Scott Eastwood for Alarum and Jared Leto for Tron: Ares.
On the female side of things, the contenders for the title of Worst Actress are Ariana DeBose for Love Hurts, the iconic Natalie Portman for Fountain of Youth and Michelle Yeoh for Star Trek: Section 31.
The Worst On-Screen Couple category is undoubtedly the most fun. Nominees include the seven artificial dwarfs in the film Snow White, James Corden and Rihanna for The Smurfs, Ice Cube with his zoom camera in War of the Worlds and, once again, The Weeknd with "his colossal ego" in Hurry up tomorrow.
