Italy and Denmark call for stricter measures against "uncontrolled immigration"

Italy and Denmark, through their prime ministers, Giorgia Meloni and Mette Frederiksen, have issued a joint statement expressing their disapproval of what they describe as“uncontrolled immigration.” They are calling for stricter measures at the European level.

One of their proposals is to establish repatriation centers in third countries outside the EU, a strategy that Italy has already begun to implement, particularly in Albania.

The two leaders assert that, despite their political differences, they share the same goal: “defending Europe.” They believe that illegal immigration has negative consequences and also emphasize the need to take concrete measures to address these challenges.

“We do not accept uncontrolled immigration into Europe and have promoted a strict immigration policy both in our own countries and throughout Europe,” Giorgia Meloni wrote in a post on Facebook.“No one can deny the negative consequences of illegal immigration on our societies: rising crime, increasing pressure on public services, and erosion of public trust. The situation is particularly serious when undocumented migrants, who have no right to remain in our countries, commit acts of violence, engage in drug trafficking, or are responsible for sexual assaults.”

In recent days, tensions have arisen among European countries in the wake of the Ceuta crisis. In late July, tens of thousands of migrants entered the Spanish enclave of Ceuta via Morocco. European Union member states disagree on how to manage this crisis. Italy and Spain have implemented reciprocal checks at airports and ports.

Meloni and Frederiksen emphasize that respect for European laws and values must apply equally to undocumented migrants and legal residents, and they advocate for the protection of European cultural identity.
