The war in Ukraine continues to claim victims. According to a United Nations report, last month—July—was the deadliest month for Ukrainian civilians since April 2022.

In the first half of 2026, UN monitors recorded 1,396 civilian deaths and 7,978 injuries. This was reported by OCHA, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

In recent weeks, Russian attacks using long-range missiles and drones have increasingly targeted populated areas behind the front lines.

"The increasing use of ballistic missiles and other long-range weapons in densely populated areas is contributing to a rise in civilian casualties and widespread damage to homes, businesses, and other civilian infrastructure," said the UN human rights chief in Ukraine on the UN website.

Attacks near Kyiv and in Kramatorsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia have killed and injured civilians and caused damage to homes, schools, transportation networks, water systems, and humanitarian facilities.

Millions of Ukrainians remain displaced, and approximately 13 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance. UN agencies are providing shelter, cash assistance, healthcare, education, and psychological support, and have launched a winter plan focused on heating, repairs, food, and protection.

“UNICEF once again calls on all parties to fulfill their obligations under international humanitarian law, including the protection of children and civilian infrastructure,” according to a press release published by UNICEF. "Attacks that kill or injure children must stop."
