A 22-year-old man is in critical condition after falling from the Brabo Fountain on Antwerp’s Grote Markt during the night from Saturday to Sunday. Footage circulating online shows him losing his balance while climbing and plummeting from a height of about ten meters.

The Antwerp police confirm that the victim was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. No information is available at this time regarding his current condition. According to the police spokesperson, in addition to the accident, the police are also investigating any potential criminal implications of the incident.

The Brabo Fountain is a protected monument on the Grote Markt, directly across from City Hall. In Belgium, anyone who intentionally damages a monument or statue can be prosecuted; the Penal Code provides for a prison sentence of eight days to one year and a fine for the destruction or damage of monuments and statues. In addition, the city of Antwerp may also impose a GAS fine for certain acts of public nuisance. Moreover, this is not an isolated incident. The Brabo Fountain has frequently been the scene of dangerous climbs and stunt-seeking behavior, including by young people who have lost their balance. Such actions are not only risky for the climber themselves but can also cause damage to the heritage sites in the historic market square.

The Brabo Fountain, featuring the statue of the legendary Brabo throwing the hand of the giant Druon Antigoon into the Scheldt, is a recognizable symbol of Antwerp and stands in the middle of one of the city’s most heavily visited squares. That is precisely why the police now want to investigate whether the fall was merely an accident or if there are additional circumstances involved. The case is part of a broader focus on safe behavior around monuments and street furniture in Antwerp’s city center. While the young man’s medical condition is the top priority, the investigation will also have to determine whether he can be held liable for any damage to the heritage site.
