Russia bombarded Kyiv with a massive wave of 600 drones and 90 missiles during the night of Saturday to Sunday, the heaviest attack on the Ukrainian capital to date. Mayor Vitali Klichko speaks on Telegram of "a terrible night for Kyiv."
Although air defenses intercepted most of it, the remaining projectiles struck 40 locations in and around the city. This left four dead and 65 wounded. Apartment buildings, offices, stores and a subway station, among others, were hit in the attack. Residents speak of an attack "unprecedented in the entire war."
Russia also deployed the Oresjnik, a hypersonic missile that reaches 10 times the speed of sound and cannot be intercepted by Ukraine. It was the third deployment ever of this weapon, which can also carry nuclear warheads and thus sends a clear intimidating signal. The missile struck the town of Bila Tserkva, 80 kilometers southwest of Kyiv.
Moscow presented the attack in retaliation for a Ukrainian drone attack on a student accommodation in occupied Starobilsk. According to Russia, the attack killed 21 people. Ukraine denies targeting civilians and claims it was the headquarters of a Russian drone unit.
