Six Dutch youths between the ages of 21 and 25 are in jail on the Greek island of Kos on suspicion of assaulting and robbing three Italian youths.
The altercation between the Dutch and the Italians began when one of the Dutch men jumped on a bicycle that the Italians had rented and rode off with it. When the Italian caught up with the Dutch man and tried to take back his bicycle, he tore the Dutch man’s shirt. The group of Dutch nationals then began beating the Italians: they demanded that the Italians pay them 150 euros for the torn shirt and forced them to withdraw the money from an ATM.
After the incident, the Italians went to the police. Based on their testimonies and surveillance footage, the Greek police were able to identify the Dutch nationals: they were arrested at their hotel on Monday. The 150 euros and the bicycle were found in the hotel room.
An investigation has been launched against the six Dutch nationals: they are currently being held on suspicion of robbery and unlawful deprivation of liberty.
According to the local Italian media outlet Treviso Today, the three Italian youths, who are from the northern part of Treviso in northern Italy, returned home on Thursday.
