On Saturday evening, three people were killed and dozens were injured in an explosion at an Italian restaurant on Kudrinskaya Square in Moscow.
Russian authorities say an unidentified woman was carrying a homemade bomb. When security guards denied her entry to the restaurant, the device detonated. The woman herself, a security guard, and a customer were killed in the blast.
Police initially reported three deaths and 15 injuries; later, the total number of injured was revised to 21. The restaurant was closed that evening for a private event.
Russian sources offer varying explanations for the explosion: the counterterrorism unit cites a homemade bomb, while some Telegram channels refer to a gas explosion in the kitchen. Other media outlets suggest that the bomb may have been detonated remotely after the woman was denied entry to the restaurant and that she may not have known she was carrying a bomb.
A rumor spread on social media that a private party was being held at the restaurant to celebrate the birthday of a high-ranking Russian general.
The explosion is part of a series of attacks and targeted operations in Russia since the start of the war against Ukraine in 2022, including previous deadly bombings targeting military personnel and figures associated with the war in Ukraine.
