U.S. President Donald Trump lashed out on his social media platform Truth Social after Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson met with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican. He called Johnson "useless" and had advised the pope not to meet with him.
"Someone should explain to the pope that the mayor of Chicago is useless, and that Iran should not have a nuclear weapon!" Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Brandon Johnson, the mayor of Chicago, stated that Trump is "making it harder for working families to make ends meet" and accused him of waging a "blasphemous war in Iran".
The Mayor had traveled to Rome with a delegation of 46 people and presented the pope, born in Chicago and known as a fan of the Chicago White Sox baseball team, with some memorabilia from the Chicago Cubs and honorary doctorates from DePaul and Loyola University.
The feud between Trump and Leo has been going on for weeks. Trump previously called the pope "weak on crime" and declared he's "not a big fan" of him. "I don't want a pope who is fine with Iran having nuclear weapons. I don't want a pope who thinks it's terrible that America attacked Venezuela. I do not want a pope who criticizes the president of the United States because I'm doing exactly what I was elected to do," Trump wrote.
The pope responded by saying he "is not afraid (of) the Trump administration or to proclaim the message of the Gospel loudly."
