The United States did what was expected of them in the World Cup opener. Paraguay was easily defeated 4-1, securing the first, reassuring three points; a first step toward qualifying for the second round. The U.S. still has to face Australia (June 19) and Turkey (June 26) in Group D. Qualifying for the next round is certainly not out of the question for the U.S. national football team. President Donald Trump is already looking ahead and sees his national football team as a strong contender for the title.
Trump called U.S. head coach Mauricio Pochettino ahead of the first match. “I just wanted to say that you’re a fantastic man and coach,” the president said, while the other players listened in over the speakerphone. “I also know how great the players are. I think you have a great chance at the title,” were the motivating words from the U.S. president just before the U.S. team’s first match.
“Thank you for your support, Mr. President,” responded head coach Pochettino. “We’re going to do everything we can to make you and the people proud.”
And Trump’s inspiring words certainly had the desired effect. With a comfortable victory and no fewer than four goals scored, the U.S. team gained confidence. The match against Turkey promises to be a tough test for Pochettino’s team. But with a win against Australia, the United States might already be assured of qualifying for the next round of this World Cup.
The United States has never won the World Cup in men’s football. Their best performance came in the very first edition of the World Cup in 1930 in Uruguay, when the U.S. took home the bronze medal. The U.S. women’s team, on the other hand, has been crowned world champion no fewer than four times. This makes them the most successful football nation in the world.
Is the path open for the U.S. men’s team to win its first-ever world title? The U.S. president, for one, openly believes in his team and the power of the home crowd.
