A German family in Dibbesdorf, near Hanover, has been finding hundreds of human bone fragments in their yard every day since April, according to the AD. So far, more than 1,600 bones have been found—from adults as well as teenagers and children—which has led to a lot of speculation in the village.
The family discovered the remains while working in the garden after they bought their house two years ago. The police immediately halted the digging, but the family continued to come across more bones afterward, including two small skull fragments that may have belonged to a child.
A pathologist reached a conclusion in early June: “No murder, no crime, but a war grave.” The police investigation was then officially closed.
The police told the regional newspaper Braunschweiger Zeitung that, according to an elderly man, soil from a cemetery had been used for construction work. For the garden’s owner, however, the mystery remains unsolved: he still wonders how cemetery soil containing bones could have been used as a foundation.
