During a search conducted as part of a drug investigation, French police unexpectedly discovered a work by Pablo Picasso. The exclusive piece may be worth several million euros. The investigation has since expanded to include theft and receiving stolen goods after the painting was found in a home in Champigny-sur-Marne, east of Paris.
The French police had expected to find a shipment of drugs but stumbled upon an unexpected art treasure by none other than Pablo Picasso, according to AFP.
According to the French public prosecutor’s office, the discovery was made during a raid conducted as part of an investigation into drug trafficking. In addition to the painting, investigators also found cannabis resin, luxury clothing, and several thousand euros in cash. The artwork has since been authenticated as a genuine Picasso, but the authorities have not disclosed exactly which work it is.
According to French media, it is believed to be a portrait of Marie-Thérèse Walter, Picasso’s lover and muse. The painting is said to have been stolen from an art storage facility in Paris. An employee of that storage company reportedly confessed to the theft and stated that he wanted to expose the company’s security vulnerabilities.
The value of the work is estimated at 12 to 15 million euros. Picasso’s portraits of Walter are among his best-known works and are often sold at auctions for similar amounts.
Four suspects have already been brought before a judge in the case. More charges are expected as the investigation continues. A trial is tentatively scheduled for August.
