The mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, has announced that July 7 will be a “day of mourning” in memory of the victims of what he describes as “the largest enemy attack on the capital.”
Flags will be flown at half-mast on all city buildings. Mayor Klitschko is also calling on citizens to do the same.
In response to the attack on Kyiv overnight from Sunday to Monday—which has claimed 11 lives—Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is calling on the United States and his country’s European partners in particular to take action at the upcoming NATO summit in Turkey.
In a post on X, Zelensky confirmed that Russia fired 68 missiles and 351 attack drones, causing damage at more than 10 locations in Kyiv.
“Our fighters performed well today in intercepting drones and cruise missiles, but unfortunately not in intercepting Russian ballistic missiles. And the reason for this is the insufficient supply of interceptor missiles,” said the Ukrainian president.
“It is crucial that the world—first and foremost the United States and our European partners—come forward with strong decisions following the NATO summit in Ankara to support our air defense, and thereby protect the lives of ordinary people,” Zelensky added. "As long as Patriot missiles remain in our allies’ stockpiles, Russia will only be encouraged to continue destroying residential buildings. The United States and Europe have sufficient power to put an end to this terror."
