According to U.S. media, the United States and Iran have agreed to temporarily halt attacks against each other and to meet again on Tuesday in Doha. According to Axios, the talks will focus specifically on the dispute over the Strait of Hormuz, following the recent drone and airstrikes between the two countries. A temporary ceasefire should now give both sides breathing room for diplomatic talks aimed at reaching a lasting peace agreement.
Tensions have escalated again in recent days, as both sides have targeted each other as part of the broader conflict surrounding the ceasefire and the provisional memorandum of understanding reached earlier this month. A U.S. source told Axios that both sides will “temporarily” take a step back and that ships will be allowed to sail freely.
Tuesday’s talks were originally scheduled to take place in Switzerland and focus on Iran’s nuclear program. However, due to the escalation, the agenda has been narrowed and the venue moved to Qatar, where the sensitive situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz will take center stage.
According to U.S. officials, the technical discussions on the implementation of the framework agreement are still proceeding as planned. The channels for resolving any conflicts are also expected to remain operational. There has not yet been official confirmation of a definitive location for all the talks, but the meetings in Doha have been confirmed by multiple sources.
The recent escalation underscores how fragile the memorandum between Washington and Tehran remains. Nevertheless, there appears to be some diplomatic breathing room for the time being, with the hope that the talks in Doha can ease tensions surrounding one of the world’s most important shipping routes.
