Starting in January 2028, Sony will cease production of physical discs for new PlayStation games. From that point on, new titles will only be available for purchase digitally, via the PlayStation Store or at select retailers. PlayStation announced this in a blog post.

According to the Japanese company, this decision aligns with a clear market trend. More and more players are buying their games digitally, causing demand for discs to decline for years. Sony calls the transition a logical evolution and says it will allow the company to better align with the preferences of its community. The change does not apply to games that have already been released or that are scheduled for disc release before January 2028. Physical distribution will therefore continue as usual for those titles.

Across the entire gaming industry, digital downloads and online stores have become increasingly important. Sony says it will continue to invest in ways to make games accessible and offer players choices in how they purchase new titles. The company emphasizes that it wants to continue delivering a “world-class gaming experience” to its fans.

A long journey so far

The PlayStation originated in the early 1990s when Sony initially collaborated with Nintendo on a CD-ROM device for the Super Famicom, but that deal fell through. Sony then further developed its own concept under the name PS-X, which became the basis for the later PlayStation. The first PlayStation was released in Japan on December 3, 1994. Thanks to its 3D games, CD format, and competitive price, the console quickly became a success. The United States and Europe followed in 1995, where the PlayStation immediately found a large audience. The PlayStation 2 was released in 2000 and went on to become Sony’s best-selling console. This was followed by the PlayStation 3 in 2006 and the PlayStation 4 in 2013. In 2020, Sony released the PlayStation 5, featuring more powerful hardware and a focus on faster load times and modern graphics. In addition to home consoles, Sony also released portable systems, such as the PSP and the PS Vita. Today, PlayStation is one of the best-known brands in the gaming world, with decades of popular games and millions of fans worldwide.
