According to reports in the Flemish media, the road vignette for using Belgian roads has moved a step closer to becoming a reality: the vignette is set to take effect in May 2027.
Discussions about the introduction of a road vignette have been ongoing for months: a complex matter, as it requires a cooperation agreement to be reached by Belgium’s three regional governments—namely, Flanders, Wallonia, and Brussels. According to the newspaper De Morgen, an agreement on this matter is within reach.
The newspaper was able to review the draft agreement. According to the draft, the vignette will be linked to the license plate, and no sticker will need to be affixed. The vignette could be purchased for one day, ten days, one month, two months, or one year.
For newer cars, the vignette costs 9 euros per day, 12 euros for ten days, 19 euros per month, 30 euros for two months, and 100 euros per year. The price for owners of electric vehicles is lower, ranging from 8.10 euros per day to 90 euros per year.
The draft also addresses the fines for those driving on Belgian roads without a vignette: 70 euros for a first offense, 140 euros for a second, and 210 euros for the third and subsequent offenses.
The road vignette applies to everyone driving on Belgian roads: not only foreigners, but also Belgians themselves. The Flemish government plans to offset these additional costs by reducing the current vehicle tax and hopes the vignette will generate an additional 120 million euros in revenue per year.
