Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov believes it is simply “not necessary to take the West seriously anymore.” But at the same press conference with foreign diplomats, he did emphasize that he actually fears Europe.
Russia no longer views the United States as an impartial mediator in the war in Ukraine and now calls Europe the greatest threat to global security. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made these remarks to foreign diplomats in Moscow on Tuesday.
Lavrov said that, according to Moscow, Washington is abandoning its role as a neutral interlocutor and is instead ramping up sanctions pressure on Russia. He also criticized Europe and the United Kingdom for their arms deliveries to Ukraine.
According to Lavrov, Europe is “the greatest threat to peace and global security.” This message aligns with the broader Russian position that European support for Kyiv is further fueling tensions.
The U.S. stance has, however, become tougher in recent days. At the G7 summit in France, President Donald Trump reportedly stated that Russia must reach an agreement and that Washington could reimpose sanctions.
Trump also spoke there with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and signed a G7 statement promising tough measures against Moscow. This was seen as a notable shift in policy toward Ukraine.
Since Trump’s return to the White House, the U.S. has been trying to position itself as a mediator between Kyiv and Moscow, but concrete progress in the talks has so far been lacking.
