The performance of Erling Haaland, the striker for the Norwegian national team, at the World Cup in the U.S. has sent shockwaves through his home country.
Norway won its first match at the World Cup in the United States, defeating Iraq 4-1, with two goals from striker Erling Haaland in the first half. His first goal in the 29th minute marked Norway’s first World Cup goal since 1998.
The joy his goals brought to his compatriots back home made the earth tremble in Norway.
“On Wednesday evening, the seismic station in Bergen recorded clear signals in the immediate vicinity of the station originating from the World Cup match between Norway and Iraq. The largest fluctuations coincided with the goals scored by Erling Braut Haaland, which sparked loud cheers from Norwegian fans,” according to NORSAR, the Norwegian Institute of Seismology.
"The most distinct effects are visible in connection with the Norwegian goals, particularly Haaland’s two goals. The signals are likely due to the cheering and movements of the Norwegian fans attending the match in Bergen," the statement continued. "When many people react simultaneously to major sporting moments, their collective movements can cause ground vibrations that are recorded by sensitive seismometers."
Haaland could bring joy to his compatriots once again with World Cup goals in the match against Senegal on Tuesday, June 23, and against France on Friday, June 26.
